I read Victorian Psycho last year and loved it so much, I've had my eye on this book ever since.
Mrs. March is married to George March, a successful author. But after someone points out that the main character in his latest book appears to be inspired by Mrs. March herself, she becomes fixated on the comment...
O.M.F.G. Mrs. March is not O-fucking-K.
As soon as I started, I was hooked by Mrs. March's paranoid thoughts and actions. Couldn't stop myself from being dragged into her slow descent into madness as she goes about her business. And what's her business exactly? Being a dutiful wife who spends all day inside her own head being paranoid about everyone and everything because the world revolves around her.
She's an interesting and contradictory character because she's very self-centred, but at the same time doesn't like herself very much. Mrs. March is critical about her looks and can't stop thinking about shitty things that happened to her in the past. Terrible abusive things that made her into an awful person.
Mrs. March is also a total bitch who continually judges others. She's cruel and relishes in other people's discomfort. Absolutely loves when bad things happen to others. Especially her husband, because she fucking hates George with a passion. Almost as much as she detests her own son. Oh, did I forget to mention she has a son? That's probably because Mrs. March likes to forget about the troublesome child as well.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun with this one. It's an ambiguous psychological trip as an unreliable and unlikeable narrator falls into psychosis. While it deals with a lot of disturbing topics, there's also an edge of dark humour that I really enjoyed.
Mrs. March is many things and most aren't good, but she's definitely entertaining.
