This is a book that caught my eye several weeks ago and I ended up buying a copy for my Kobo Libra Colour.
In Shellwater Bay, three women in different stages of their lives meet at the gym and form a strong friendship that slowly starts an unexpected revolution, while they each deal with their own problems...
Well, I enjoyed this book SO much. It's absolutely addictive.
I started reading because I was curious about the storyline, but hung around because I loved Joany, Steph and Heather. This trio is amazing. They're women who are forced to face just how hard it is to be a woman sometimes. Dealing with everyday sexism and disgraceful misogyny is an unfortunate part of their lives, but it's harder when the betrayal is done by the people who are supposed to love them.
Joany is in her seventies and is quite wealthy, but her demanding husband makes life hard. Heather's husband wants a divorce and dealing with his behaviour forces terrible memories to the surface. Steph is a mother of three who loves her little ones but struggles with her husband's attitude and inability to take care of the kids without involving his pushy mother.
Together, these three women become each other's pillar of support, while getting up to some mischief. I loved these three women and felt for them.
Although it's quite different, this book reminded me of another fantastic feminist book: The Change. It features three strong characters who overcome the obstacles in their lives and depend on each other.
There are some pretty heavy and terrible themes/situations that happen to Joany, Steph and Heather, but the writing style delivers everything with the right amount of seriousness. There's also a good dose of humour injected into the story that definitely adds another layer of entertainment.
