I've been meaning to read this book for a while and I finally got stuck into it last night.
Haven has returned to Malice House because she has nowhere else to go. Besides, she still needs to clear out what's left of her father's belongings and decide what to do with the house. But as soon as she gets there, she discovers an unpublished book written by her father called Bedtime Stories for Monsters. After finding the book weird things start to happen, and when she starts illustrating it, things gets worse...
Engrossing. Mysterious. Dark.
I love it when a book hooks me in from the very beginning, and that's exactly what happened with this one. As soon as Haven enters Malice House, the strange vibes take over and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next.
Haven's father was a well-known author who lived in a coastal town and got dementia, but as she eventually finds out, there's something very mysterious going on because the creepy unpublished bedtime stories collection she finds/reads somehow trickles into real life after she starts illustrating some of the characters.
Haven's story is full of twists and turns as she attempts to solve the mystery her father left behind in the spooky house he called home. It's also full of ambiguous characters, as well as downright terrifying characters.
I also like the gothic vibes and how things got weirder and weirder. And there are SO many layers that fit together. Not to mention the monsters. Yikes.
Such an awesome book!
PS. I found the concept of this book fascinating. As a writer, it definitely made me think about what would happen if some of my characters stepped out of the page.
