After recently reading The Butterfly Garden and Roses of May, it was time to read the third one.
Several years have passed since FBI agents Brandon Eddison, Victor Hanoverian, and Mercedes Ramirez stopped a killer from murdering another young girl. Now an avenging angel is leaving bloody, traumatised kids on Mercedes's front porch. As the situation escalates, her own memories start to engulf her mind...
Haunting. Dark. Heartbreaking.
As expected—because I really enjoyed the previous two books—this installment turned out to be both intriguing and very disturbing.
The introduction of a serial killer who appears to liberate kids from their abusive parents by slaughtering them in front of the abused child creates an ethical argument. On one hand, it might seem like a good deed that gets rid of the garbage. But on the other hand, vigilante justice isn't right because no one has the right to be judge and executioner.
The story is told in the POV of Agent Mercedes Ramirez who understands what it's like to be a victim. Mercedes is such an awesome character, and her story unfolds in a way that makes her past collide with the gruesome acts of an unrelenting killer.
While in the previous books, I despised the serial killers instantly, this time I actually felt a degree of sympathy for the killer because of their own suffering.
It's so nice to catch up with these cool FBI agents. I love their family dynamics and how they welcome victims into their lives. Also the author's writing style always hooks me in.
Looking forward to reading the final book...
