THREE DAYS TO DEAD by Kelly Meding

They’ll never see her coming. . . .

When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue—in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there—her troubles are only just beginning. Before that night she and the two other members of her Triad were the city’s star bounty hunters, mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor—and she can’t even remember what it was.

Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice—and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days Evy will die again—but this time there’s no second chance...

This is another one of those books that I've had on my TBR pile for a while. I've been meaning to pick it up for ages, but something else always seemed to get in the way. The other day, I decided it was time to get stuck into it. And boy, did I ever!

Evangeline Stone is a tough Dreg Bounty Hunter. She hunts monsters down in a city filled with them. But the night she wakes up inside a morgue, in someone else's body, she can't remember how she got there. Or why she's suddenly in a dead woman's body. So she sets off on a harsh and very dangerous adventure to find out what happened to her, and why she died. In the process, she connects with her Handler, gets chased by some horrible creatures, as well as other Hunters, and slowly pieces together a conspiracy that will turn both the Dreg and human world upside down. Of course, remembering how she died adds a new level of heartbreak.

Oh, and she's only got three days to find her way out of this very dark trouble...

Man! This book was totally amazing. Not only is it fast-paced and filled with danger at every turn, but there are a lot of very interesting creatures--some are friends, and some are enemies. But all of them help get her closer to the awful truth.

I also really liked Evy. She's thrust into an impossible situation, but gets on with it, no matter how dangerous things get. No matter how horrible the situation is. Oh, and Wyatt was also an awesome character who is willing to sacrifice everything for Evy.

Yeah, I loved this book. So much that I ordered the second book in the series last night. :)

It's still cold...

...but now that the sun's back, it makes everything better. :)

Besides, as my daughter reminded me this morning, we only have one more month of winter left. Yay. Something to be excited about. Soon, the days will start to get longer, and the chill in the air will only make an appearance early in the morning and at night. Yeah, something to look forward to.

Anyway. Yesterday, I finished the second round (which also happened to be the errata stage) of edits for IRIS . Sure, I ended up finding quite a bit to tweak, but I'm very happy with how it's turned out. Now, I just need to wait for the proof copy so I can double check all the changes and wait for it to be released. Phew. This has been a little more stressful than usual. I think it was too close to release date. Especially for such a long novel. It ended up going over the 88k mark. Oh well. It's done now. :)

Yesterday, we popped into our local shopping centre and went to K-Mart after having dinner at Subway. I picked up two books--HEREAFTER and FORGOTTEN. And then hubby noticed a trolley filled with books. So I went over to take a look, expecting the usual paperbacks they're always trying to get rid of, and instead found a bunch of YA titles for $1 each. Seriously. Some of them aren't even that old. I think I ended up grabbing seven of them, lol. I'm such a sucker for books.

I can't help myself.

Anyway. Today, I just want to take a deep breath and enjoy the day. The last few days have been so full of hard editing, that I just want to take it easy. Tomorrow, however, I intend to plan for next week... which is when I want to start writing a new book. We'll see.

Have a great day!

THE FIRST DAYS by Rhiannon Frater

The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.
Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni’s stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.
They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town. With almost no hope left outside the walls, Jenni, Katie and Jason must find sanctuary inside the Fort, less they succumb to the horrors of the outside world.

This is another zombie book that I've been looking forward to reading, and I'm very glad that I did!

Jenni is a battered wife who finds herself all alone and outside the house filled with her zombie family. Katie is a prosecutor who was minding her own business, and was forced to abandon her wife when the world changed. It's pure luck--or maybe fate--that Katie happens to be driving down Jenni's street and manages to save her only moments before she is eaten.

This brings together two very different women, with one thing in common--survival. As they drive out of the city and try to escape the growing army of the walking dead, they develop a very strong friendship, and meet a lot of helpful people along the way. They also slowly realise that zombies aren't their only threat...

I absolutely loved every minute of this fast-paced book. It's got everything that I love about zombie stories--adventure, the horror of surviving in a world that's dying around the main characters, strong and kind people helping them along the way, confusion, grief, sadness, plenty of zombie horror, tension, people behaving badly, a hint of romance, and the sheer determination of the human spirit to survive. The apocalypse can bring out the best in some people, and the worst in others. And these are the stories that make the zombie genre so fantastic!

Yeah, this is a great book and now I can't wait to read the rest of this awesome trilogy. I actually preordered the second book this morning! ;)

4AM!

That's the time I woke up this morning. Hubby went into work super early today, and when that happens I get up with him and as soon as he leaves, I get stuck into whatever I'm working on at the moment. It's a great headstart to the day.

And since I'm in the middle of the final round of edits for PROMISE--man, I love that cover--I got back into it right away and managed to get 31 pages done. I'm now sitting on page 201/243. That makes it a lot easier for me to (maybe, actually) get it done by this afternoon. Fingers crossed.

I also read a chapter of the book I'm reading right now. Wish I could read more, but edits come first. :)

Oh, and I just finished a yoga workout.

All of the above before getting my daughter off to school. Not bad.

No wonder I enjoy early mornings. Just wish it wasn't so cold, though. I'm freezing!

Have a nice day!

Well, new week...

What have you got on offer? Will it be more horrible rain, or will the sun stay with us this time? I'm hoping for some lovely sunny weather, for a change.

Anyway. I actually allocated this week--which also happens to be the last week of July, gasp--for the last round of IRIS edits. And they actually arrived in my Inbox on Thursday night. Once again, cutting it very close, but I've set myself the goal of getting it done and emailed by Wednesday afternoon. And if I can reach page 200/355 by the end of today, it just might be doable. ;)

I started it on Friday, continued on Saturday, took yesterday off, and got stuck into it first thing this morning. I actually got 25pgs done, which brings me to: 127/355. Still got a long way to go, and I've made a lot of changes, but there's no point in freaking out. Yet. lol.

Well, that's pretty much it for me. I enjoyed the weekend with hubby, daughter, and kitty... but I wasn't feeling very well. Not sure what was going on, but Saturday was especially crappy--tired,  clogged up, snotty, sore throat, dizzy, felt like throwing up, and felt very weak. Felt like that yesterday as well, but I'm hoping I'm over the worst of it. With the constant cold and rainy weather, it's no surprise I got sick. :/

Okay. It's almost time to head out to drop my daughter off at school. So, I hope this week is a lovely one for you all! :D

MATTERS OF THE BLOOD by Maria Lima

Keira Kelly, half-breed descendant of a powerful paranormal family has chosen to live apart from her clan and among humans in the Texas Hill Country. When she experiences a prophetic vision that foretells the vicious murder of her human cousin, Marty Nelson, she vows to determine the truth. Keira begins to uncover long-concealed secrets and risks alienating everyone she knows, from her former lover, Sheriff Carlton Larson, to the enigmatic Adam Walker, once a friendly acquaintance and now much more!

This is a book that I've had on my TBR pile for several years now. I'm not kidding. I've had it so long that it's actually the original Juno Books version, not the re-released Pocket version, lol. I've just got so much to read, that sometimes I lose track of some of my books. But I'm now determined to read the first book in several series, to see if I'm interested in getting stuck into them.

Keira Kelly has a lot going on. She's going through some changes, which for her has been manifesting in some very strange and violent dreams. She also just found out that the new Sheriff in town is her former flame, an old friend she knew in London has decided to make Rio Seco his new home, and her annoying human cousin has just been murdered.

She might not have liked her cousin Marty much, but she's determined to find out who did it and why... which gets her involved in trying to figure out a very confusing mystery. She also discovers a bunch of vampires nearby, and their involvement in some very old secrets that are now resurfacing...

I really enjoyed this book! It was a lot of fun, but also has a pretty cool mystery, and some very dangerous situations. There's a lot going on, but everything ties up perfectly in the end. Keira is also a very interesting person and I can't wait to see what else she gets herself into. There's also a really cool cast of characters, and I particularly liked her strong friendship with Bea, who's just human.

Yeah, this is a series I want to get stuck into. Which is really cool, since I just found the second book already on my shelf! Awesome, huh?

Another Rainy Day

Yeah. Looks like this yucky, wet weather is going to stick around for a while longer. Not too long, I hope. I'm already over it. :(

I've got a quota of two rainy days before I'm totally sick of them.

Remember those guest blog posts I wrote the other day? Well, they're both live:

If you have a spare sec, pop on over and say 'Hi'. :D

Well, yesterday turned out to be quite a relaxing day. I caught up on some online stuff, read a bit, grabbed my calendar and started slotting some writing goals from now until the end of the year, and even managed to do a little cleaning/dusting/sorting. The kinds of things that I've been neglecting for weeks, because there's been so much to do.

I expect today will be about the same. I've got several things I'd like to do, and reading is definitely one of them. I'm really enjoying the book I'm reading at the moment. Which is always an awesome thing, right?

Well, that's it for now. I'm going to get ready to head out and drop my daughter off at school. And then, well, I'll have to cut my walking short because my usual route gets flooded. :( Like I said, I'm just about ready for some sunshine.

See ya tomorrow!

Wednesday, 20 July 2011

So...

You know how most people chat about the weather when they don't have anything else to talk about? Well, I talk about the weather all the time. Seriously. I like to talk about it when it's nice, when it's crappy, and even in between. It makes no difference to me. I just like it. ;)

LMAO.

At the moment, we're in the middle of winter and have been having some pretty shitty weather. Like, the sun might be out for several days, and then the rain sets in for a lot longer. As well as some crazy-ass wind. They're both pretty bad on their own, but when they hit together--it's horrid!

Yesterday started out as a sunny, mildly cold morning. It was lovely, really. Cold, but still nice enough to enjoy my daily walk by the river. Then, when I sat down at the computer after lunch, I noticed the sun had disappeared, and then the temperature plummeted to almost artic conditions. Oh, and as soon as I stepped outside, it started to rain. :( Talk about crappy. By the time we got back from picking my daughter up from school, the wind had picked up, too. And during the night, the combination of torrential rain and horrible wind woke me up several times. Boo!

The torrential rain seems to have stopped for now, but only 30 minutes ago, it was going nuts out there. Which makes it really hard for getting my daughter to school. Not just because we walk there--which will be hard enough--but it will also be pretty cold and hellish at school. What to do??

Ugh. Winter sucks.

So. Anyway. Remember that small to-do list I had yesterday? Well, I managed to cross everything off. Yay. It always feels great when you set goals for yourself and get them done. :)

Today, I've decided to take it easy. Have a kinda day off from things, which will probably entail me trying to organise my writing schedule from now, until the end of the year. :) Besides, I haven't been feeling the best this week. I've got some cold and/or flu symptons. So every workout I do takes it out of me, but at the same time, it helps strengthen me against being sick. Catch 22, anyone? lol.

What else? Oh yeah, I read this small article the other day. It's about how Charlaine Harris will be ending the Sookie Stackhouse series at Book 13. This makes me sad, because I love the series and I'll miss Sookie and the gang. But it also makes me wonder what other series she'll introduce us to. I loved the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries series, the Lily Bard Mysteries series, and the Harper Connelly series. So I can't wait to see which character/s and world she'll be releasing next...

Well, just spoke to my daughter and it looks like she wants to go to school. O_o Ah, okay. Looks like I'll be getting pummelled by the rain and wind very soon. Unless Mother Nature decides to give me a break and stops for a tiny while. Cross your fingers for me.

See ya!

EAT SLAY LOVE by Jesse Petersen

Sarah and David have survived the zombie apocalypse. They stood side by side and fought the undead, mad scientists, and even bionic monsters until the unthinkable happened. A zombie bite. But not even that could stop them. Now, with a possible cure in hand, they're headed east, looking for a safe zone behind the rumored "Wall." They're feeling pretty optimistic.
That is until Dave stops sleeping and starts lifting huge objects.

Eat. Slay. Love.
Because they haven't got a prayer.

This is the third (and last) book in the Living With The Dead series by Jesse Petersen. And after enjoying the hell out of the other two, I couldn't wait to get stuck into this one.

Sarah and David now have a new mission--they've got the zombie cure and are making their way towards the Wall to make sure it gets into the right hands. Sure, there might not even be a Wall, but it's worth the effort. So they continue to trek across the country, stumbling on other survivors along the way. Here, they meet up with an annoying reporter on a mission, and a doped-up rocker. But not before nearly being killed by some radical rednecks who want to teach them a lesson.

Oh, and there's the David-having-super-strength thing. And the zombies-don't-detect-David thing. Both seem to be side effects after receiving a dose of the cure himself, and definitely prove to be very handy.

This is another hilarious, fast-paced addition to a series that I've grown very attached to. It's got a bit of everything--hungry zombies, lots of zombie shooting, plenty of funny banter, some sad moments, some happy moments, and some darn-scary moments. Besides, Sarah and David are so likeable, I'm very sad to see them go. I can't believe the publisher dropped this series. I'm seriously bummed about it. :(

At least I can buy myself a copy of this Kindle book, featuring short stories set in the same world but featuring other characters.

Trying to get back on track

Yep. I'm in zombie-reading territory again, and I'm lovin' it. :)

Well. My daughter went back to school yesterday, but I had several things that I needed to do, and didn't have a chance to squeeze in any blogging. It's been happening a lot lately. Which I don't like.

But the last few months have been super-busy with so much stuff, and I don't think things are going to slow down because I've still got edits coming, and plan to write several more stories during this second half of the year. Plus, don't forget all the real life stuff, etc.

Yeah, there's not enough time in the day and all that. lol.

Today, I've got a small to-do list which consists of answering some interview questions, getting some snail mail ready to send this afternoon,  cutting some chicken breast for tonight's dinner, reading more of EAT SLAY LOVE, and getting some more laundry done.

So, I better get to it! See ya later.

SURVIVORS by Sophie Littlefield

DOING RIGHT ISN'T EASY IN A WORLD GONE SO WRONG

Cass Dollar outlasted the fall of civilization. But surviving Aftertime requires the kind of toughness that can conquer the violent landscape of California and still retain its humanity.
When a young boy and his dying grandmother are brought to the Box, the survivalist community where Cass takes shelter, she realizes that without her help he won't be long for this unforgiving new world. But while the Box is a haven from the roaming marauders—and the flesh-hungry Beaters—it forbids children within its confines. The boy will be turned out to fend for himself. All that stands between him and the brutal wilderness is Cass's protective instincts, and the stubborn resolve that's gotten her this far Aftertime.

I absolutely loved AFTERTIME, so I was really looking forward to reading this novella. It takes place a month after Cass and Smoke first arrive in the Box, and before the events of REBIRTH.

Cass, Smoke and Ruthie have settled in the Box and live a relatively peaceful life. Until a young boy and his dying grandmother arrive, and suddenly, Dor--the leader/founder of this community--has to make a decision of whether to enforce the 'no kids' rule.

It's a very short novella, but still captures the essence of Cass and this dangerous, bleak world she lives in. There's some Beater action as well, and some sad moments, but I still enjoyed it. A lot.

Can't wait for REBIRTH. :)

THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR by Christopher Ransom

A PERFECT FAMILY
Mick and Amy Nash are an ordinary couple leading ordinary lives. And then, into the house next door move the Renders beautiful, charming, perfect . . . and not at all what they pretend to be.

AN EVIL SECRET
Too late Mick learns that something is deeply, darkly wrong with the neighbours. Who are these people Where did they come from And what are they hiding in the basement.

A SHOCKING TWIST ENDING
As death and darkness descend on the neighbourhood, only Mick can save his family and expose the horrifying truth about the people next door a secret already hailed as the most electrifying twist ending in years.

When I received this book for review, I didn't know a thing about it. The cover looked creepy and after reading the blurb, I was really curious about it. Besides, I like a good horror story. So I started reading it with enthusiasm...

The Nash family have some new neighbours, but there's something really creepy about them. Yet, that's not the most horrifying thing going on in their lives.

Each member of the family is going through their own thing at the moment. The father, Mick, is struggling to keep his business afloat, while losing time, and then not remembering what has happened. The mother, Amy, isn't happy with the way she looks, is constantly feeling lonely and struggling with some trouble of her own. The son, Kyle, is an average teenage boy getting up to mischief, until he meets a mysterious girl. And the daughter, Briela, is an odd girl who is prone to bouts of bizarre behaviour. But when they all realise that their neighbours have plans for them, they find themselves in the middle of some pretty horrible realisations.

The People Next Door is a book with an intriguing concept, and that was enough to suck me in. I really wanted to know what was going to happen to the Nash family. But the more I read, the more I started to lose interest. Until I realised that I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters, and even found the big reveal disappointing.

I'm a sucker for a scary, creepy story... but found this one didn't deliver.

Neglectful Blogger

Yeah, that's me. But I didn't have a choice. I've had a very full week. And not just because of the edits I mentioned the other day. There were a lot of real life things that I had to take care of, too. O_o

*taking a deep breath*

It took me all week to get through the first round of edits for IRIS, which ended up being 380 pages. And I didn't meet my self-imposed-Friday-afternoon deadline. I had to finish off this morning. Luckily, hubby went into work really early this morning. So by the time my daughter woke up, I'd already finished the edit, emailed it to my editor, and even did a yoga workout.

So much to do, so little time.

Well, I'm going to go and do... nothing. ;)

Enjoy your weekend!

SPIDER'S BITE by Jennifer Estep

My name is Gin, and I kill people.

They call me the Spider. I'm the most feared assassin in the South — when I'm not busy at the Pork Pit cooking up the best barbecue in Ashland. As a Stone elemental, I can hear everything from the whispers of the gravel beneath my feet to the vibrations of the soaring Appalachian Mountains above me. My Ice magic also comes in handy for making the occasional knife. But I don't use my powers on the job unless I absolutely have to. Call it professional pride.

Now that a ruthless Air elemental has double-crossed me and killed my handler, I'm out for revenge. And I'll exterminate anyone who gets in my way — good or bad. I may look hot, but I'm still one of the bad guys. Which is why I'm in trouble, since irresistibly rugged Detective Donovan Caine has agreed to help me. The last thing this coldhearted killer needs when I'm battling a magic more powerful than my own is a sexy distraction...especially when Donovan wants me dead just as much as the enemy.

This is the first book in the Elemental Assassin series. And OMG, it totally rocked my world! This is one seriously awesome book.

The story starts with an amazing scene inside an asylum, and everything takes off from there. It hooked me in right away.

Gin Blanco is a cold-hearted assassin, known as the Spider. Well, everyone thinks she's cold-hearted because she has quite the reputation of being a killer, and is feared by many of the lowlives in Ashland. Which works out great for her, because she's great at what she does. Yet, she's not the cold woman most assume she is. She just knows how to show the world what she has to, and how to keep emotions hidden, because of what happened to her in the past.

Oh, and she's also a Stone elemental, with a little ice magic thrown in the mix.

I enjoyed every single moment of this fast-paced, and dangerous story. The twists and turns were fantastic. This world of elementals, corruption, and backstabbing is dangerous and dark, just like the location. Ashland is filled with danger and dangerous people who have access to some serious magic. The cast of characters was also intriguing, and I can't wait to read more about them! No wonder I've already ordered the second book in the series. ;)

But what I really loved the most about this book was Gin--her heartbreaking past, her loyalty to the man who got her off the streets, and her determination to right wrongs.

I also liked her relationship with her mentor, Fletcher. I liked her sibling-like relationship with Finn. And I absolutely loved her sizzling interactions with the detective, Donovan Caine. Yikes! Who would've thought so many sparks could fly between them, huh? I can't wait to see how their relationship develops throughout the series.

Man, judging by the introduction to this world--this is going to be one kick-ass, and very addictive series! I can't wait to see what happens next...

OMGosh, this week is nuts!

Can you believe it's Thursday already?!

I haven't had a chance to blog all week, because I've been super busy trying to get the first round of edits done for my upcoming August release. Yep. You read that right, and it's a little too close for comfort. Especially since this book is in the 86k-mark territory, and my daughter's still on school holidays. (Though I have to say that she's been very understand and supportive about my need to spend countless of hours in front of the computer.)

I've given myself the deadline of getting these edits done by Friday afternoon. I've got my fingers crossed. I hope I can meet that self-imposed deadline, because I've been very distracted lately. We've had a lot of things to pick up from the post office, several errands to run, and things to send out, too. So I've hardly had a spare moment at all. In fact, I haven't even had a chance to write the two guest blog posts I owe. :(

They're next on my to-do list.

Oh, and I've been totally engrossed in SPIDER'S BITE by Jennifer Estep. OMG, what an amazing UF book this is! Not sure why it's taken me so long to read it. I've had it on my TBR pile since last year. Oh well. That's not important now. I've already ordered the second book in the series, and have about 100pgs left of this one. I would've really enjoyed spending hours on the couch just reading, but instead, this book's being my nightly reward for getting pages edited during the day. :)

Anyway. Just thought I'd pop in to write a quick blog post. I'm currently sitting on page 226/355 on this edit, and would love to reach page 300 sometime today. Going to try to get there. See ya later!

ALIEN TANGO by Gini Koch

It's been five months since marketing manager Katherine "Kitty" Katt started working with the aliens from Alpha Centauri, and she and Jeff Martini are getting closer. But when an experimental spacecraft is mysteriously returned to the Kennedy Space Center, Kitty and the rest of her team are called in to investigate. Now the team must survive murderous attacks, remove a space entity from a group of astronauts, and avoid an unhinged woman with a serious crush on Kitty's high school boyfriend. And that's all before evil masterminds decide Kitty's extermination is vital.

I just finished reading this book, and really enjoyed it. It's the second book in the Alien series starring, Kitty Katt. I can't help but chuckle at her name. It gets me every time, lol.

Just like the first book, it's filled with a multi-layered plot that has Kitty, the A-C guys, and several government departments running around like crazy while trying to outrun the bad guys, attempting not to get blown up, avoiding a clingy ex who still wants her, some alien haters, a disembodied alien entity, Martini's parents, and even alligators.

Phew. That's a lot of stuff. And I can't forget to mention how hot her relationship with Martini is, although that also suffers through a few obstacles.

This is another action-packed book, and while it does let you take a few breaths every now and then, something else soon pops up to ruin Kitty's day. She can take care of it, though. She might be a human woman surrounded by very nice looking aliens, but she's also got great instincts and can work through a lot of problems from a different--and sometimes, very odd--angle.

What a fun book!

*smile*

Because when you smile, it puts you in a good mood and you can try to forget the things that are bothering you. Things you really shouldn't mention on your blog or anywhere online, so you bite your tongue and keep your frustration to yourself.

Sigh.

Wow. It's already Wednesday. Already halfway through the first week of my daughter's school holidays and I've done zip! Seriously. Of course, I tried not to allocate too many things during the next few weeks on purpose. lol.

Still, I've been reading a lot. There are so many good books out there, and I've been having an awesome run of them. (As you can see below) I've also managed to blow a lot of my book budget for this month already. O_o

Last night, we went to watch the latest Transformers movie and I did enjoy it, but didn't think it was all that great. I'm just glad we didn't fork out for the ridiculous 3D ticket price and instead found a session without it. I'm so over 3D. I reckon it's not needed in most movies (actually, the only movie I've truly enjoyed 3D in was Avatar), it affects my eyes, and also happens to be a rip off. That's my opinion, anyway.

So. What have I been doing writing wise? I've pulled out all of my Sierra Fox notes and research. I've also sorted my SF files, and everything is a lot neater now. And the main thing I wanted to do before starting anything else was come up with titles for the next four books in her series. Which I did on Monday. Then yesterday, I found one of my titles was already taken by an upcoming book from the same publisher, and another title didn't sound quite right...

Luckily, while I was falling asleep last night, the perfect title struck me for Book Three. I wrote it down right away. And I also know how I'm going to change the other title so it does sound right. ;) I know it doesn't sound like much progress, but it's a very cool way for me to get back on track. Cool!

Anyway. Better get going now. Need to update my Word doc again. lol.

Have an awesome day!

ULTRAVIOLET by RJ Anderson

EVERYTHING YOU BELIEVE IS WRONG

Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.
This is not her story.
Unless you count the part where I killed her.
Sixteen-year-old Alison has been sectioned in a mental institute for teens, having murdered the most perfect and popular girl at school. But the case is a mystery: no body has been found, and Alison's condition is proving difficult to diagnose. Alison herself can't explain what happened: one minute she was fighting with Tori, and the next she disintegrated. But that's impossible... Right?

I have to admit that this concept grabbed me from the moment I read the blurb.

Alison is a little withdrawn and really only has one friend. She doesn't trust people easily and has an amazing extra-sensory ability she tries to hide from others. She also has a nemesis--a popular, beautiful girl who seems to want to sabotage her every step of the way and bears a strange mark on her arm.

So the afternoon Alison gets into a fight with Tori after detention, and the popular girl disappears, Alison's life is thrown into chaos.

All of a sudden, she finds herself thrown into a psychiatric ward and pumped full of drugs that make her forget what happened the afternoon she was accused of killing Tori. Yet, when she gets moved to a facility called Pine Hills, Alison slowly starts to remember exactly what happened. But what she remembers doesn't make any sense, because Tori was there one moment and disintegrated the next.

Stuck in Pine Hills with other teenagers suffering from a variety of real mental illnesses, Alison's plight to go home begins. But how is she going to make it home when her own mother doesn't believe in her, and her doctor insists on keeping her on meds? It's not until she meets Dr. Sebastian Faraday, that Alison starts to feel alive and starts trusting herself. She's always found it hard to believe in herself and to trust others, but with him she feels an instant connection.

As all the pieces start to come together, Alison soon realises that everything she thought she knew isn't exactly right, and that what is first perceived as mental illness is actually a very special gift. Maybe the only thing able to save her...

Ultraviolet is an imaginative and fascination book that hooked me in from the very first page and kept me hanging on until the very end. I suffered through Alison's impossible plight and felt everything as harshly as she did--the anger, sadness, disappointment, confusion, and even her rare moments of joy. She's an incredible narrator, and took me on an amazing journey of self-discovery that I'll never forget.

I won't go into what happens when everything begins to unravel and starts to make sense because it would spoil everything, but I will say that the twists and turns will keep you guessing until you reach a very unexpected and amazing end.

I enjoyed every moment of this outstanding and well-written book, and look forward to reading more of RJ Anderson's books. She's a fantastic storyteller!

The Story of Vampire Blood
Author’s Revised Edition by Kathryn Meyer Griffith
A rerelease of my 1991 Zebra paperback romantic vampire novel
out from www.damantionbooks.com on July 1, 2011

In 1990 or so I’d just got done releasing my first three paperback novels with Leisure Books, a romantic historical (The Heart of the Rose 1985) and two romantic horror books (Evil Stalks the Night, 1984 and Blood Forge, 1989), and because I wasn’t making much money on them, was looking, as most so-called restless young authors were doing, to move up in the publishing industry.

So I wrote snail mail letters to three established authors of the day – Dean Koontz, Stephen King and Peter Straub – asking for a little advice and a little help. What do I do next? I want to be one of the big dogs running in the big races. I want to make the big bucks. Be famous like you. (Ha, ha. I was so naïve in those days!)

Well, Stephen King and Peter Straub never answered my letters but one rainy fall night I got a phone call from Gerda Koontz (Dean Koontz’s wife) and she said Dean had gotten my letter and wanted me to have a name of a brand new agent who I should call or write to and say I was recommended by him. If I thought it strange that Dean Koontz himself wasn’t actually talking to me I was told by Gerda that he was a shy man and had had a particularly hard couple of months because of family problems (I think it had something to do with his father in a nursing home or something, but can’t exactly recall now) and he’d asked her to call me. She often did that for him, as well as helping him with the business side of his writing career. He (through her…and I got the impression that he was actually nearby telling her what to say the whole time) said I had to have an agent (I didn’t have one) and then he gave me the name of an ambitious one, Lori Perkins, just starting out and his advice on what I should do to advance as a writer.

I do remember being incredibly touched that he, a famous busy novelist that I admired – I loved his Twilight Eyes – would take the time to talk to me, even through his wife. They were both so sweet and we talked for nearly an hour all about writing, books and everything.

I took their advice and contacted that agent and she agreed immediately to represent me on my fourth book, Vampire Blood, no doubt, because I said Dean Koontz had recommended her to me. Name dropper! But Vampire Blood was the reason I’d contacted those famous authors in the first place. I thought it was the best book I’d done so far and wanted it to go to (what I thought at the time) would be a better publisher than Leisure Books, which contracted and hog-tied their writers with a horrible ‘potboiler’ one-size-fits-all ten year contract with low advances and 4% royalties. Yes, I got a whole whopping 14 cents a book in those days, but, I must confess, they did print thousands of paperbacks each run and had a huge distribution area.  I thought I could do a lot better. Anyway, Lori Perkins wanted me to send her the book and she did like it and eventually sold it, and then three others zip-zip-zip right after, to Zebra Books (now known more as Kensington Publishing) at 6% royalties and double the advances I was used to getting. They slapped a sexy blond vampire with a low dress on the cover and a hazy theater behind her. Lovely colors. I thought it was an eye-catching cover. I was so happy. I thought I’d made it! Again, so naïve.

Vampire Blood. A little story about a family of vicious killing vampires who settle in a small Florida town called Summer Haven and end up buying and fixing up an old theater palace to run, and pluck their victims from, and a divorced, down-on-her-luck ex-novelist and her hard luck father, who along with friends, help thwart them.

Now to how and why I wrote it.

My husband and I lived in this small Illinois town, Cahokia, at the time and there was the neatest little hole-in-the-wall theater in a nearby shopping center we used to go to all the time…run by a family of a sweet man, Terry, and his wife, Ann, and sometimes their three children, two teenage boys and a girl named Irene.  Such a friendly, but odd couple. The run-down theater was their whole world it seemed. The kids helped take in the tickets, pop the popcorn and sell the candy snacks.

Now the minute Terry and Ann found out, in one of our earliest conversations, that I was a published novelist they were my greatest fans. Terry went right out and bought all three of my books and they all read them. Terry always thought they’d make great movies. Next time my husband and I went to the little theater Terry and Ann greeted us like old friends, so delighted to see us, and refused to take a dime from us for anything. We got in free whenever we went from then on. Now in those days my husband, my son, James, and I were pretty broke. I worked as a graphic designer at a big brokerage firm in downtown St. Louis (across the Poplar Bridge from our Illinois town) but my husband was in between jobs. We lived on a shoestring. Hard times. So I always was so tickled that we could get into the local movies for free. We went a lot, too, as we loved movies, especially science fiction and horror films.

One night I was watching Terry and Ann and their joy in running that little theater, with the kids bustling around doing their jobs, and I got the idea for Vampire Blood. Just like that! Use them and the theater as a backdrop for a vampire novel. Hey, wouldn’t it be neat, I off-handedly mentioned to Terry one night, if I wrote a book about a family of vampires that was trying to pass as a real human family, the man and woman wanting so badly to fit in and lead a normal life for a while, renovating and then running a theater together…but the kids are wild and, as kids always do, make trouble for them in the town…killing people? Terry loved the idea and I asked him if it’d be all right to use him and his family as a template for the vampires. He was thrilled to be part of anything to do with my books and said yes. So…I wrote this book about them (sort of), the theater (making it much grander than it was, of course), a small town terrorized by cruel, powerful vampires who can change into wolves at will….and a saddened lonely woman, her brother, and her ex-husband (who she still loves and ultimately ends up with again after he saves her life) who finds herself again, but loses a lot, as well, fighting these vampires. Vampires she doesn’t believe in at first.

I was very happy with the book when it was done and dedicated it to Terry and Ann when it came out in 1991. Terry and Ann were thrilled, too.

So Vampire Blood came out and did very well for me, second only to my Zebra 1993 Witches. As the years went by it went out of print and when, twenty years later, Kim Richards at Damnation Books contracted my 13th and 14th novels, BEFORE THE END: A Time of Demons and The Woman in Crimson, she asked if I’d like to rerelease (with new covers and rewritten, of course) my 7 out-of-print Leisure and Zebra paperbacks – and I said a resounding yes!

So…here it is…Vampire Blood…twenty years later, alive again and better, I believe,  than the original because my writing then was done on an electric typewriter, with gobs of White-Out and carbon paper (I couldn’t afford copies), using snail mail; all of which didn’t lend itself to much rewriting. And in those days, editors told an author what to change and then the writer only saw the manuscript once to final proof it. Who knew what those sneaky editors were slipping in inbetween and before the final book was in an author’s greedy little hands. Hey, and I was working full time, raising a son, living a life and caring for my big extended family in one way or another, too. Busy, exciting, loving, happy and sad times.

For this new version, Damnation Book’s cover artist Dawné Dominique made me an astonishingly intriguing cover of a lovely vampire (Irene the youngest vampire who turns out to be the most brutal and ancient in the end)…but, thank goodness, without the low sexy top. And my DB editor, April Duncan, helped me make it a better novel.

A lot has happened to me and my family in these twenty years, as well. Both my parents, and my beloved maternal grandmother, the storyteller of her generation, have since passed away. Many people we used to know have. Old boyfriends, old friends and relatives. I miss them all! I no longer have that agent; she went on to bigger advances and bigger writers.  I lost my good job at the brokerage firm, bumped around in lesser jobs for years, always writing in my spare time, and now, at long last, write full time while my husband works way too hard in a machine shop to support us.

Rewriting the book brought back so many good memories…and tears over those no longer here. The theater closed sixteen years ago, the owner believing it’d served its purpose and used up its time. Terry and Ann, heartbroken, were never the same. They had other jobs, none they truly cared about.  Ann is still with us, but Terry died a few years ago, I heard from someone. We lost contact once they stopped running the theater and we moved from Cahokia to a nicer town miles away.

But I’ll never forget those early days and the stories that came with them. Days of high hopes and far distance future dreams…some of which have come true and some which haven’t. I’ve never made the big bucks, never gotten truly famous, but now, at long last and to my great delight, all twelve of my older books, from Leisure, Zebra, and The Wild Rose Press are being rewritten and reissued from Damnation Books and Eternal Press between June 2010 and July 2012. Better than ever after I’d rewritten them. I have plans to write more books and short stories, too, when they’re done. Most importantly, I’m living a good life with a husband I adore and brothers and sisters I love. Writing the stories I was born to write and happy I am. I have my memories. All in all, I’m a lucky, lucky woman.

So, all you writers out there…never give up and never stop writing!

Thank you!

DEAD, UNDEAD OR SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN by J.A. Saare

No one knows that better than Rhiannon Murphy. She's left behind the flash and sass of Miami for the no-nonsense groove of New York City, eager for a clean slate and a fresh start. A bartender by trade, a loud mouth by choice, and a necromancer by chance, she's managed to keep her nifty talent hidden from those around her--until now.
The deliciously good-looking vampire Disco knows her secret, and when he strolls into her bar to solicit help investigating the mysterious disappearances of his kind from the city, she discovers he's not the kind of person that appreciates the significance of the word no. But in a world where vampires peddle their blood as the latest and greatest drug of choice, it's only a matter of time before the next big thing hits the market. Someone or something is killing vampires to steal their hearts, and unlike Rhiannon, this isn't their first stroll around the undead block.

You know, I was going to start reading another book just before I decided to check out this book on my Kindle. I just wanted to read the first chapter, get a taste of it... and before I realised it, I'd read the first three chapters and was hooked!

This is the first book in the Rhiannon's Law urban fantasy series.

Rhiannon is a tough bartender with an attitude, and a vocabulary that includes many colorful curse words. She's also a necromancer, and can see ghosts. Although she has no formal training in necromancy, or even knows the kind of power she possesses, she's soon thrust into a dangerous world of vampires. And when Disco asks her to help him find out why vampires are going missing, her world is turned upside down.

This gets her closer to a fellow necromancer called Ethan (she dubs him Goose) and she starts to learn a little more about necromancy. It also gets her so deep into this mysterious and dangerous world that if she wants to survive, she's forced to put her total trust in Disco. Trust is something Rhiannon has a huge issue with. Her past shaped her into what she is, and keeping others at a distance is how she's survived. Not anymore.

I absolutely loved everything about this book! I think it's UF at it's dark and grittiest. I found Rhiannon to be an awesome narrator, and liked her instantly. Others might've had a problem with her attitude, but I actually found it drew me closer to her. Made me like her more. And Disco? What can I say about Disco? I loved him just as much as Rhiannon. I liked Ethan too, and am totally intrigued by Paine.

Also, this book is very well written. Not just the plot and the very interesting characters, but the writing style makes the reading smooth and fun. As well as intense and scary.

The addition of two short stories at the end of the book was also a great idea:

Eyes on Me is the story of Rhiannon and Disco's first meeting, and gives us a glimpse at Cash, and how Disco works out what she is.

More Than Words is an erotic little story between Rhiannon and Disco, which reinforces how deep their connection is... and makes the end of the book that much more heartbreaking. :(

After the very surprising ending, I can't wait for the next book in the series: The Renfield Syndrome.

H&UFRC books read: 31/24
