When I first watched the trailer for WICKER, I knew it was a movie I wanted to see. But it wasn't until last week that I found out it was based on a short story! So I went looking for it and found it on Amazon.
In a small coastal village, lives a lonely, ugly girl. She guts fish and minds her own business. The villagers shun and gossip about her. The day she pays the basket-maker to make her a husband, it changes her in unexpected ways. And the neighbours can't have that...
Wow. I absolutely LOVED this! It might be a short story but it packs quite the punch. The range of emotions I felt while reading WICKER took me by surprise. I didn't know this fable would be so deep and would reveal the worst of human nature.
In many ways, this is a cautionary tale about jealousy. And about minding your own business. But the deeper meaning that I took from it is that people don't like to see others being happy. And will do just about anything to tear down that happiness.
While the ugly girl lives an uneventful life by herself with a rundown house, all the villagers are glad. They think they're better than her, therefore she deserves to be miserable and alone. But as soon as she finds happiness and has a man in her life that actually wants to be with her and takes care of the house, all the selfish villagers want to do is destroy the couple.
It's quite gross what they do to the ugly girl and the wicker husband when all they did was live their own private lives and didn't hurt anyone. Yeah, it made me sad. But I do love the ending because it's what the asshole villagers deserve. Also the basket-maker turns out to be a very interesting character.
Yeah, I really enjoyed this short tale and can't wait to watch the movie.
