HOLLY by Stephen King

When Penny Dahl calls the Finders Keepers detective agency hoping for help locating her missing daughter, Holly is reluctant to accept the case. Her partner, Pete, has Covid. Her (very complicated) mother has just died. And Holly is meant to be on leave. But something in Penny Dahl's desperate voice makes it impossible for Holly to turn her down.

Mere blocks from where Bonnie Dahl disappeared live Professors Rodney and Emily Harris. They are the picture of bourgeois respectability: married octogenarians, devoted to each other, and semi-retired lifelong academics. But they are harbouring an unholy secret in the basement of their well-kept, book-lined home, one that may be related to Bonnie's disappearance. And it will prove nearly impossible to discover what they are up to: they are savvy, they are patient, and they are ruthless.

Holly must summon all her formidable talents to outthink and outmanoeuvre the shockingly twisted professors.

When a new Stephen King book comes out, I get really excited because I know I'm going to lose myself for days.

Holly Gibney has seen a lot. Now, in the middle of the pandemic, she's suffered a loss that awakens a bunch of complicated emotions, memories, and revelations. So, when a woman reaches out about her missing daughter, she decides to take the case. And as soon as she begins her investigation, she realises this disappearance might lead her down a very dark and twisted path...

Wow. This is definitely another King hit! I seriously couldn't stop reading, and pretty much read the last half in one night.

There's something intoxicating about King's writing. His characters—whether pure and kind, or rotten to the core—drag me into the story every single time. And don't let go until I race to the end.

The mystery always grabs me enough to keep reading. The story intrigues me so much I can't stop thinking about it, even when I'm not reading. And his writing style is smooth and crisp, full of enough horror to satisfy my infatuation with dark fiction. But what gets me the most is the humanity contained within the pages of every tale.

So much of the gory and terrifying horror he writes about is always grounded in real life situations we recognise all too well. He just has a tendency to push past the threshold and shoves his Constant Readers down the darkest road possible. And this story is no exception.

Plus, Holly has become one of my favourite characters. As well as Jerome and Barbara Robinson. These three make an awesome team and I can't wait to read more of their adventures.

Holly is a thrilling novel that grabbed a hold of me from the first sentence and refused to let go. The barbaric acts at the centre of these despicable crimes are straight out of a true-crime show, and will teach you to never judge someone by their age. Also, the way he deals with the pandemic is so true to life, it's chilling.

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of this awesome book.

SILVER NITRATE by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Montserrat has always been overlooked. She's a talented sound editor, but she's left out of the boys' club running the film industry in '90s Mexico City. And she's all but invisible to her best friend Tristán, a charming if faded soap opera star, even though she's been in love with him since childhood.

Then Tristán discovers his new neighbour is the cult horror director Abel Urueta, and the legendary auteur claims he has a way to change their lives - even if his tales of a Nazi occultist imbuing magic into highly volatile silver nitrate stock sounds like sheer fantasy. The magic film was never finished, which is why, Urueta swears, his career vanished overnight. He is cursed.

Now the director wants Montserrat and Tristán to help him shoot the missing scene and lift the curse... but Montserrat soon notices a dark presence following her.

As they work together to unravel the mystery of the film and the obscure occultist who once roamed their city, Montserrat and Tristan might just find out that sorcerers and magic are not only the stuff of movies...

I always look forward to reading a new Silvia Moreno-Garcia book, and this one was no exception.

In 1993, Montserrat lives in Mexico City and constantly finds herself fighting to be taken seriously as a sound editor in the film industry. Tristán is her best friend and used to be a popular soap opera star until an accident destroyed his career and reputation. Together, they find themselves caught up in an old curse shortly after meeting an aging cult horror director...

Wow. That was a blast! Another hit from this very talented author. Bravo.

There's so much to love about this book. The fact that Mexico City comes alive within the pages of this story. The way curses, magic, betrayal, and the supernatural are woven perfectly within the complicated, yet strong friendship between the two narrators. How well some of the darkest moments of world history are blended with the allure of old cinema.

Like I said, there's a lot to love in this tale.

Montserrat and Tristán are fantastic characters. So different that they complement each other perfectly. So similar that, of course, they've been friends forever. The honesty and rawness of their individual lives kept me as riveted as the intriguing concept, and the many characters who help make this story shine.

I couldn't stop reading.

Silver Nitrate is an amazing book! First, the characters totally grabbed my attention, because they're all interesting and their voices compelling, but then kept me glued to the pages because the creepy situation that slowly unravels is so fascinating it wouldn't let me go.

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of this awesome book.

IMMORTALITY: A Love Story by Dana Schwartz

Hazel Sinnett is alone and half-convinced the events of the year before - the immortality, Beecham's vial - were a figment of her imagination. She doesn't even know if Jack is alive or dead. All she can really do now is treat patients and maintain Hawthornden Castle as it starts to decay around her.

When saving a life leads to her arrest, Hazel seems doomed to rot in prison until a message intervenes: Hazel has been specifically requested to be the personal physician of Princess Charlotte, the sickly granddaughter of King George III. Soon Hazel is dragged into the glamour and romance of a court where everyone has something to hide, especially the enigmatic, brilliant members of a social club known as the Companions to the Death.

As Hazel's work entangles her more and more with the British court, she realizes that her own future as a surgeon isn't the only thing at stake for her. Malicious forces are at work in the monarchy, and Hazel may be the only one capable of setting things right.

I loved the first book in this duology, and was looking forward to finding out how everything was going to end.

After Hazel lost Jack, she retreated to her family's Hawthornden Castle and has been helping people with medical emergencies. But when she's arrested for murder and thrown in jail, Hazel is convinced her life is over. Until she's shipped off to London to become the sickly Princess Charlotte's personal physician, and stumbles on a whole lot more...

Well, as expected, I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. Actually, I got halfway in a few sittings because I was hooked!

Hazel's story continues a year after what happened with Dr. Beecham and Jack. She can't get over the boy she fell in love with and the note he sent her, but he hasn't reached out again and she gets lost in what drives her passion—her work.

I loved the ups and downs, how secrets unfold and a whole new world opens up in a different location. The mysteries that lie beneath London are intriguing and miraculous. As well as what's going on in the castle, which reveals a sweet tale that I hadn't expected but especially enjoyed.

The new cast of characters added in this installment enrich the atmosphere and create new wonders and problems for Hazel. Both personal and professional obstacles she has to overcome with the knowledge she's picked up along the way.

Immortality: A Love Story is a thrilling conclusion to this fantastic story, and I enjoyed every minute I spent in this alternate version of history. There are surprises, shocks, as well as twists and turns, but mainly this truly is a love story at its core.

A dark love story that has the power to overcome... immortality.

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of this awesome book.

UNTAMED SHORE by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Baja California, 1979: Viridiana spends her days under the harsh sun, watching the fishermen pulling in their nets and the dead sharks piled beside the seashore. Her head is filled with dreams of romance, travel and of a future beyond this drab town where her only option is to marry and have children.

When a wealthy American writer arrives with his wife and brother-in-law, Viridiana jumps at the offer of a job as his assistant, and she's soon entangled in the glamorous foreigners' lives. They offer excitement, and perhaps an escape from her humdrum life. When one of them dies, eager to protect her new friends, Viridiana lies - but soon enough, someone's asking questions. It's not long before Viridiana has some of her own questions about the identities of her new acquaintances.

I always look forward to reading Silvia Moreno-Garcia's latest release. No matter what genre she tackles, or which time in Mexico's history she chooses, her writing style never fails to hook me in.

It's 1979 and Viridiana lives in the small town of Desengaño with her mother, stepfather and a bunch of half-siblings. She knows how to speak, write and read several languages, loves to read, and often watches the dead sharks on the beach after the fishermen pull their nets. The day three rich Americans rent a holiday house, one of them hires her, and her life is never the same again...

I really enjoyed this! It's another intriguing, original story with a real sense of location, starring a very likeable, headstrong young heroine.

Viridiana is on the cusp of womanhood and is trying to find her own path. One that is different to her mother's. She doesn't want to tie herself down in a boring marriage or start having a bunch of kids so young. Her head is full of ambition and romantic notions that rival her favourite movies and books. She dreams of escaping to the city and living an exciting life. When she meets three wealthy Americans living a carefree life, this only deepens her desire to go places. With some unexpected consequences.

A lot of interesting things happen in Viridiana's life during this hot summer, but I especially liked her ability to adapt and learn. Sure, some of the tips she picks up are questionable, and she's willing to overlook several situations even though she knows better. But in the end, I thought her character arc was very interesting.

Untamed Shore is a coming of age story with a good dose of crime thrown in. It's unpredictable and I couldn't stop reading because Viridiana's voice is so compelling.

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of this awesome book.

THE TOLL HOUSE by Carly Reagon

A house with history. That's how the estate agent described the old toll house on the edge of the town. For Kelda it's the perfect rural home for her young son Dylan after a difficult few years.

But when Kelda finds a death mask concealed behind one of the walls, everything changes. Inexplicable things happen in the house, Kelda cannot shake the feeling of being watched and Dylan is plagued by nightmares, convinced he can see figures in his room. As Dylan's behaviour becomes increasingly challenging, Kelda seeks answers in the house's mysterious past. But she's running out of time.

Because something has awoken.

And now it won't rest . . .

I love ghost stories and the synopsis for this one sounded very interesting.

Kelda and her son, Dylan, have moved into a new house. It's also a new town, a new job, and a new school. The pressure of all these changes makes things hard for both of them, but what's even worse is when strange things start to happen in the toll house...

Well, this turned out to be quite the haunting tale. In the real sense of the word because the dead definitely leave an impression, but also because of the complicated lives of the living.

Getting caught up in this tale was easy and happened quickly. I lost myself in Kelda's intense life instantly. She's a single working mother who bought an old house that needs a lot of repairs/updating. It also comes with a history she knows nothing about. Her boss is demanding. Her son befriends the local troublemaker. Her friend Nick comes with a few extra emotional attachments. The new guy she starts dating is a little awkward and is definitely hiding something. And that's before her estranged sister is introduced.

Yikes! Kelda's life is messy and actually takes a few unexpected twists, turns and plenty of revelations.

Yeah, there's a lot of life stuff for her to work through and I gladly followed along as she struggled to balance everything out. But when the house starts acting strange and bizarre things start to happen, that's when the creeping dread crawled onto the page and kept me guessing.

The story is mainly in Kelda's POV, but there's also the POV of Joseph. He's the toll house keeper and lives there with his wife, in the 1860s. But his life is plagued with tragedy, and as the two timelines come together, the story falls into place when several shocking events from the past are unearthed.

The Toll House is as much a ghost story about the strength of the human spirit, as it is about the very real and familiar story of unconventional relationships. Kelda's perseverance in spite of her many struggles really grabbed me, and kept me glued to the story all the way to the very disturbing end.

Thank you Hachette Australia for sending me a copy of this awesome book.
