Getting Stuff Done...

Hello! How are you today? Hope you're enjoying the month of November. We've had a few temperature drops, but this spring is turning out to be quite warm.

So, what's new?

As you can see below, my latest book was released this week and I'm very excited. Yay!!! 🥳

FALLEN DESTINY is a cozy urban fantasy, with a good dose of horrormance, about an occult detective with abandonment issues, a found family, and a mystery that might reveal the burning questions she has about her past. I'm very proud of this novel and hope that it finds an audience, and that readers enjoy it.

If you want to know more, you can read more about it here. Or you can check out the excellent GET IT Kirkus review.

Asides from this very awesome news, I've also finished writing and revising two new short stories.

Final word counts: 2,423 and 1,327.

These tales were a bit of a surprise, especially the first one. Not only because it came out of nowhere, but what happens in this tale changes the fate of one particular character. The shorter tale is one I've had in mind for a while but even that turned out very differently. Love it when that happens!

So, here's the vampire world update: two novels, one novelette, and twenty-three short stories. The collection has now crossed 81k, and I suspect the short stories might finally be done. I think. Maybe. Except for one more thing that isn't a story but it's something that makes an appearance in the overall narrative and I've wanted to put it together since completing the very first novel. 😁

Something else that I'm very excited about is that we started getting back into yoga and have actually done two workouts already. There are so many health benefits so we want to keep this up. Fingers crossed.

I've also been reading, including this harrowing book. This was such an uncomfortable and disturbing story, also very sad.

Anyway, I'm trying to get stuck into the many books I have on my massive TBR pile. And I'm not just talking about all the hardbacks and paperbacks, I'm also talking about my Kindle and Kobo books. 😳

Well, that's it for now.

Hope you all have an awesome week!!

It's Release Day!!

 Today is the day!

FALLEN DESTINY IS NOW AVAILABLE FROM BRIGIDS GATE PRESS.

Destiny isn't human and she has the horns to prove it. She's also damned good at blending into the human world.

That, along with her powers, has helped her forge a career out of locating supernatural beings and objects.

Got demon troubles? Need a mystical artifact found? Destiny's the one for the job.

All goes well for her until the day she's hired by a mysterious nun, and for the first time, Destiny's stumped.

How exactly does a demon hired by a nun find an angel?

I'd want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to Gwendolyn Kiste, Angela Sylvaine, Sonora Taylor, Wayne Fenlon, and Brian Bowyer for these amazing blurbs:

"I've been a fan of Yolanda Sfetsos for years, and whether you're brand-new to her work or you've loved her books for as long as I have, Fallen Destiny is an absolute must-read. This cozy dark fantasy takes you on a supernatural adventure with page-turning prose and characters you'll adore. Enjoy the ride."

— Gwendolyn Kiste, Four-time Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Haunting of Velkwood and Reluctant Immortals

“Fallen Destiny is a wicked urban fantasy that will appeal to fans of Kim Harrison. Sfetsos delves into the mysteries of heaven and hell while wrapping the reader in the warm embrace of found family. Move over Hellboy, there’s a new kick ass demon in town, and Destiny won’t be denied.”

— Angela Sylvaine, Bram Stoker Award nominated author of Frost Bite.

"Fallen Destiny is a fun, devious, supernatural mystery with lots of clever twists and turns. Sfetsos manages to create a large and fascinating world of amazing characters, all of whom I loved. Don't miss this one."

— Sonora Taylor, award-winning author of Little Paranoias: Stories and Without Condition

"A cosy blend of genres: infusing horror, folklore, and eroticism, with a hint of mystery. A detective story at heart. This one, like all of Yolanda's work, is another proper page turner. A great writer."

— Wayne Fenlon, author of The Black Cabin

“Sfetsos is simply one of the best, and Fallen Destiny—thrilling, intense, and filled with suspense—displays an artist at the top of her game.”

— Brian Bowyer, author of Metro Kinetic.

"A lively and atmospheric occult mystery with a main character who’s as hellish as she is human."

—Kirkus Reviews, GET IT verdict

I'm SO excited about this new release and can't wait for readers to read my cozy urban fantasy book about an occult detective investigating a mystery that might lead to her past.

I really hope you'll give these tales a go.

Saturday, 12 October 2024

Hey!

How are you today? Long time no blog, right? 😅

But seriously, it's been a while since I posted an update, so I thought I'd pop in to chat.

Last month was really cool because my husband had annual leave and we went for some lovely adventures, long walks, and got plenty of rest. Then a long weekend followed... and now, Halloween Month is here. Yay.

A few great writing things happened. I made another book announcement: my haunted house ghost story, THESE STAINED WALLS, will be released by Horrorsmith Publishing next year. So excited to share this creepy story with the world.

Very happy about this one.

On the 30th of September, my latest book was released. NUMB (named after this very appropriate Linkin Park song) is my love letter to demonic possession stories. It's a bit THE EXORCIST and a lot SUPERNATURAL. I hope readers enjoy Chester's story. It's sad. It's creepy. And it's available in eBook and paperback right now!!

My other fantastic news is that my very first self-published book, ONLY DARKNESS,  will be released on October 31st. That's exactly 19 days from now.

I'M SO EXCITED! Not just because I can't wait to share this story, but also because it turned out really nice. The paperback copy is especially lovely. The formatting was done by Fabled Beast Design, and he did a great job capturing my vision.

I mean, check this out:

These are the author copies and the book looks FANTASTIC! Because the first half of this book has been previously published, I wanted this version to be very different. So, the former novella became a novel told in two parts.

The Kindle version is currently available for pre-order and the pretty paperback will be available on release day.

I hope readers give my lovely creepy book a shot. ☺️

Asides from all of the cool news, I've been mentally sorting through some of my finished stories. One thing that I love to do is talk to my husband about my writing plans whenever they start to plague my mind. Chatting things over always helps me make a plan, and that's exactly what I spent this week doing.

I decided to re-revise two stories that I thought were done because a bunch of different ideas/directions struck out of nowhere. I actually finished working on the longer story and I'm SO happy with the changes I made. I think this makes the story much stronger and I also fixed some unexpected errors while I was there.

The other story is next week's problem because I have more details to sort out first. ☺️

Well, that's about it for now.

Hope you all have an awesome weekend!!

A cool announcement!

My first self-published book will be released this Halloween! 🎃

ONLY DARKNESS is a novel told in two parts. Both parts originally started their very separate lives as novellas featuring the Roscoe family, and the dark curse that threatens to destroy them.

You might recognise the first part, because it was previously published for a while, but after I got my rights back... I wasn't sure what to do. Until my husband suggested we self-publish it.

And I thought, why not add the sequel/companion to the mix? I mean, it made sense. This way, anyone who already read the novella can now experience a slightly different version while finding out what happens in the previously unpublished story that follows.

So, I purchased an awesome cover made by Fabled Beast Design, revised/reworked both parts, hired Erin Al-Mehairi to do the final copy edit, and Adrian Medina to format the book, then decided to publish via KDP.

It just made sense.

Here's the result:

DARKNESS IN THE WOODS BECKONS HER...

SUFFER

Kae Roscoe’s daughter vanished sixteen months ago and all she wanted during her absence was for Molly to return. But when her daughter comes back, she isn’t the same.

Molly hardly speaks and refuses to eat. The only emotion she displays is violence.

As much as Kae hates to admit it, there’s definitely something wrong with Molly, and her reappearance sets off a dark turn of events that threatens to tear the town apart.

SURRENDER

Summer Urbina has finally graduated from college and is excited about spending time with her mother. But as soon as she gets home, everything feels odd.

When her best friend sends an ominous text, Summer decides to trek across the country to make sure he’s okay.

She might not understand why, but the town of Brittle seems very familiar. The darkness calling her from the woods threatens to consume her entirely, and she’s not strong enough to resist.

PAPERBACK WILL BE AVAILABLE OCTOBER 31.

I'm happy and very proud about how this book turned out. I hope you decide to revisit or discover how this family saga ends.

I have some awesome news!

My haunted house ghost story novel will be published under Horrorsmith's Fear Forge imprint next year.

I'm SO excited and can't wait to share my creepy tale about a hellish house.

Here's a bit about THESE STAINED WALLS:

The walls within Helston House are alive, and they're very hungry.

Matilda Ashbrooke has been uprooted from her family home and forced to isolate with her eccentric grandfather during the pandemic. But the creepy Helston House has many secrets, starting with the stain on the bedroom wall that seems to be getting bigger every day...

I'm so happy to have signed a contract with Horrorsmith and can't wait to share more info as we get closer to release date.

Yay!! 😊

Cover Reveal!

If you're on social media, then you've probably already seen this absolutely beautiful cover made by Ruth Anna Evans:

It's so bright and absolutely perfect because the imagery captures Chester's struggle in the book SO well.

Speaking of that, here's the story synopsis:

SHE DOESN'T LIVE IN A HAUNTED HOUSE.
THE MONSTER IS ALREADY INSIDE HER HEAD.

Chester is no stranger to hearing voices, but after her mother disappears without a trace, the demonic voice trying to consume her is getting stronger every day.

The threat of possession might be her biggest problem, but it's not her only one. Chester's confidence in the stepmother who is trying to keep her safe is now unstable. The safe and comfortable connection with her very supportive stepbrother is slowly becoming a tangled mess that threatens their strong bond.

When Chester stumbles on her mother's precious journal, she hopes to find some answers about what's happening to her. But what she really wants to uncover is how to find her missing mother. And the answer to that mystery might come from the most unexpected source. Herself.

NUMB will be released on September 30!

You can already pre-order a copy:

And yes, I named this book after a Linkin Park song because it totally fits Chester's story... Also, I named my main character after Chester Bennington.

Thanks for reading!

As you already know, last Friday I celebrated the release of my first Anuci Press book release. Yay! And today, I want to let you know about the next book that Anuci Press will release...

NUMB = THE EXORCIST MEETS SUPERNATURAL.

I'm really excited about this dark story, and can't wait for you all to meet Chester and Darwin.

I'll share more details as soon as I can. For now, here's the story synopsis:

SHE DOESN'T LIVE IN A HAUNTED HOUSE. THE MONSTER IS ALREADY INSIDE HER HEAD.

Cover Reveal & Pre-order!

That's right!

The cover for my upcoming gothic horror novella was revealed today by DarkLit Press.

Check it out:

Isn't it beautiful?
It was made by SaberCore Art Studio, who is an amazing artist.
Also, this cover fits the story perfectly. I absolutely LOVE it.

So, what's the story about?

Here's the synopsis:

When Thera inherits a house on the cliff from her estranged aunt, her husband suggests they spend a week on the coast to sort through her family's belongings. But Hector has ulterior motives and hopes she'll fall in love with this gothic location.

Instead, these newlyweds find themselves trapped inside a house concealing an ancient family secret that might tear them apart before they get the chance to start their lives together.

Thera is slowly changing into someone—or something—else, but is willing to do whatever it takes to stop the curse.

Drawing upon the atmospheric backdrop of a cliffside house, Sfetsos intricately weaves a tale where the line between passion and peril is razor-thin. The story captivates with its raw portrayal of transformation and the lengths one goes to save love amidst looming darkness.

And here are some amazing blurbs from three fantastic authors:

"These characters will dig their talons through muscle and bone to nest in your battered heart, tormenting you long after the story is done." Angela Sylvaine, author of Frost Bite

"For fans of THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and THE CRANE HUSBAND, Sfetsos's book of sacrifice and torment will sure to haunt your mind." Ai Jiang, Nebula finalist and author of LINGHUN and I AM AI

"Inherited trauma, dark family secrets, and terrifying psychological themes blend beautifully together to leave you with an ending that satisfies and terrifies. Wendy Dalrymple, author of WHITE IBIS and ROSER PARK

October Update!

Happy Spooky Month! Hope you're all feeling the Halloween vibes. 🎃

After working really hard on several first drafts, editing, and two revision projects during the last four months, I took a break during October.

Well, my idea of taking a break means catching up on things, sorting stuff around the apartment, reading as much as I can, and reviewing the books I get through.

I do have a few things to announce, though:

I'm now represented for TV/Film by Alec Frankel at IAG! ☺️🎉 Essentially, that means that if anyone's interested in adapting one of my books into a movie or show, I now have an agent who can deal with all the very complicated details.

It's very exciting.

SUFFER THE DARKNESS is now available in audiobook. It's narrated by Jennifer Pickens who did a fantastic job setting the tone and keeping the creepy vibes alive throughout the whole book. This is the first time one of my stories has been turned into an audiobook. And I love how it turned out.

Here's a snippet:

Earlier this month, author Lauren Carter, announced the TOC for her Short Scares anthology. This is a charity project that features 69 two-sentence stories written by 69 different authors. This is such a unique collection of really short tales and I had a great time coming up with my contribution. So happy to be included with so many great authors.

It will be released next year.

Over a month has passed since BEAST OF BURDEN was released. It's a short novella that I had a blast writing. The paperback is now available. It's more like a chapbook, and I think that's why it's not getting much attention. Everyone likes a dual eBook and print release, I suppose.

Still, there's an awesome review on Goodreads by someone who totally gets the story. Love when someone connects with one of my stories the same way I do. ☺️

If you're interested in checking it out, you can grab a copy HERE.

Do you NaNoWriMo? I’ve been taking part in NaNoWriMo since 2006 and only skipped one year. I’ve even had several of these novels published. I love taking part because it's a fun challenge. Besides, I usually write first drafts in a very fast and frenzied fashion, so it totally suits me.

This year, I’m writing this: Heathers meets IT, with a touch of The Craft and a little pinch of The Exorcist. So it's basically a story about a group of friends with a very dangerous secret, the place they all want to forget, and an old mystery that bubbles to the surface. I think it's going to be fun and bloody and hopefully creepy.

Well, that's about it for now. There are a few other things brewing but I can't talk about them yet. ☺️

I hope you all have a fantastic and spooky Halloween!

Beast of Burden...

Hey, how are you today? Well, September is coming to an end. Are you all looking forward to Halloween month? Yeah, me too.

Today I have some news to share. My latest novella was released last weekend! ☺️🎉

This one is a bit of horror, a little urban fantasy, and a lot of hellish chaos.

Two sisters. A demonic battle. Only one can win.

Elis and Willa are sisters, but they're definitely not friends. Elis was forced to imprison Willa because she's hellbent on destruction, but her imprisonment was never going to last forever.

Now, Elis has no other choice but to use the dark power she resents. With the help of the person who matters the most to her, she'll have to raise some hell in order to end the demonic chaos before it begins...

Suffer the Darkness is one month old!

That's right. My horror novella has been out in the wild for over a month, and I’m still very excited. Yay! It's such an amazing feeling to see/hear readers actually taking the time to read and review my book. And some are even enjoying it.

It's fantastic!

As a storyteller, all I want to do is share my strange little tales with others. And whether you enjoy Suffer the Darkness or not, I’m just happy you’re actually taking the time to sit down and give it a chance.

Very cool stuff, that's for sure.

In case you haven't seen the awesome and creepy cover, which was made by Kristina from Truborn Design, here it is:

Nice, isn’t it? Also captures the essence of my novella.

This is not a happy story. Sure, there are glimpses of happiness and hope, lots of love to be shared between characters… but ultimately, this novella goes to some very dark places. It pushes the boundaries of what it is to be a supportive parent. A mother who wants to do the best for her family but isn’t strong enough to push against the supernatural darkness that’s stifling her life, and stealing everyone/everything she cares about.

If you like possession stories, you might be interested in Molly’s dilemma. If you like true crime, this tale of loss and recovery might grab your attention. And if you like a bit of folklore and myth in your horror, then I think you might be interested in what happens here.

You can click this link and pick up a copy from a whole bunch of bookstores. It’s available in paperback, hardback and eBook. Actually, the eBook version is only 99c.

Well, that’s about it. I just wanted to introduce you to my latest release, and the excitement that comes with having a book published.

Thank you for reading! Both this update, and my book.

June Update!

Hey! How are you today? What have you been up to? Can you believe we're halfway into 2023 already?!

Yikes. Where does the time go, right?

In Oz, June means winter, and you (probably) already know this is my least favourite season. 😫 I have to admit that it took longer than usual for the cold to settle in but now that it's here, it's seeping into my bones. FFS. I hate feeling cold. I much prefer spring and summer. Autumn used to be nice, too. But now the seasons are all muddled up anyway.

On to other things...

In case you missed it, my horror novella, SUFFER THE DARKNESS, was released by DarkLit Press almost two weeks ago, and it's been a whirlwind of awesomeness.

Check it out:

You can pick up a copy from THESE STORES, and add it to Goodreads HERE.

I'm SO excited!! Kae Roscoe's story is sad and dark. Although she gets her wish and her missing daughter returns, as soon as Molly comes back, everything starts to fall apart. It's a nightmarish ride that I hope you'll enjoy.

Everything is super cool now, but it didn't start out that way because Amazon decided to delete all the pre-orders. 😑 But the horror community helped get the word out in a big way (THANK YOU, EVERYONE), and I had a blast celebrating this release. 😁🎉

So, what else did I get up to this month? Oh yeah, I wrote the first draft of a novella. Then got stuck into a short story that came out of nowhere, but happens to be the prequel to one of my upcoming releases, and finished it this week.

Oh, speaking of upcoming releases... have you seen these two announcements?

That's right! My horrormance slasher novel about a group of friends who meet up for a reunion dinner ten years after high school and find themselves in a grisly nightmare, has found a home with Aesthetic Press. And my modern gothic horror novella about a newlywed couple, an old house, and a horrible secret legacy will be released by DarkLit Press.

Both of these will be available next year. Yay!!

I'm very excited about these upcoming stories and can't wait to share more details as their release dates draw near. They're very different, feature characters who find themselves in horrible situations, but both are horror stories I can't wait to share.

Well, this has been such a busy month full of so much that my brain feels like it's turning to mush. I'm really looking forward to spending the weekend with my husband and chilling out for a bit.

Have an awesome one!

May Update!

Hey! How are you today? How did the month of May treat you? Can you believe it's almost over? Yikes!

The weather is changing here in Sydney, and the days are getting shorter. We've almost hit winter, which you might know is my least favourite season. I don't like cold weather, prefer the longer days of summer. 😩

Well, what did I get up to this month? After the multiple edits I did in April, this month I decided to slow things down a bit. I spent some of my time updating files, catching up on things I'd neglected, and managed to get some reading done.

I also got a new story idea that I've started writing. It's one that came to me on a day when I was really sad about Loki. It's been three months since we lost him and that day I woke up from a horrible dream where we lost him all over again. I couldn't shake the sadness all day and I was really upset. Cried for a bit, until this idea hit me.

It's a strange and sad one, but it's helping me deal with the loss.

Actually, it's going very well and is expanding into unexpected territory. I crossed the 17k mark today, and I'm feeling good about it. Initially I thought it might be a novelette, but it's more likely going to be a novella. Not sure yet, but it doesn't matter because I'll keep writing until it's done.

BTW, did you see this? ⬇️

That's right! My horrormance slasher novel has found a home with Aesthetic Press, and will be released next year. Yay!! ☺️🎉

The plot goes a little like this: A group of high school friends meet up ten years later for a reunion dinner and are targeted by a mysterious maniac. 🔪

This story is my love letter to slashers, with a good dose of friendship and romantic entanglements.

As you can probably tell, I'm very excited!! Yay.

The other fantastic piece of news I have to share is that my small-time horror novella will be released by DarkLit Press in under a month.

Last week I read a copy of the paperback proof and it's lovely. Andrew puts together some absolutely stunning books and I can't wait to share this story with the world.

I hope you'll give Kae and Roy's story a go. Find out how Molly's reappearance messes with the town of Thicket.

Oh, and if you're interested in finding out a bit more about Molly, you can read the prequel short story to find out:

What happened to Molly?

When an injured teenager is spat out by the woods, she doesn't know who she is or where she's going. Until a Good Samaritan stops to help... and unleashes a darkness ready to consume anyone who gets in the way.

You can grab it HERE.

All of these exciting things make me very happy. ☺️

Did you all watch the Yellowjackets finale? What did you think? I loved it! The little twist was unexpected, but the ending was sad. Can't wait to watch the next season. Though we don't know when that'll be because of the writers strike.

Well, that's about it for now. I just wanted to post an update about what I've been doing, what's coming up, and what I'm working on at the moment.

Have an awesome day!!

I have some awesome news!

Hey! How are you today? I hope you're all having a great day.

If you were anywhere near Twitter yesterday, you might have already heard the awesome news:

DarkLit Press announced that my horror novella, SUFFER THE DARKNESS, will be released/published later this year. Yay! ☺️🎉

This is also my first time on Publishers Marketplace.

I'm super excited about this acceptance because DarkLit Press is such an excellent publisher with a fantastic catalogue of horror books. To be a part of this team is very exciting. I can't wait to share more details.

Thanks for reading!

WALL OF DOLLS has a cover!

Well, a new week is here and I hope you're all having a good one. 😊

Over the weekend, the awesome Sci-Fi & Scary blog featured the Cover and Synopsis Reveal for my upcoming YA horror novel, WALL OF DOLLS.

In case you missed it, I'm posting it here as well:

For generations, the women of the Lucas family have lived in the small town of Whenall, Massachusetts, at Raven House. They make dolls that they call wardens to protect the townsfolk, a long tradition that some might believe holds no power, but a tradition that Whenall enjoys all the same.

Quin is proud of her heritage, her cousin Beth, however, isn’t interested in her position as the future family matriarch. The girls spend their time with their two closest friends, Henri and Al, with Beth always taking the lead, flirting with the boys and leading them into mischief.

One Halloween night, Al finds a Ouija board in the attic of Raven House, and Beth eagerly encourages them all to play with it, but Quin knows that these boards are not a game. Something was unleashed that Halloween night, and a year later, the girls will face the consequences. Can Quin stop them from being devoured by the evil force that spoke to them that night? The force that haunts the woods surrounding Whenall? With Henri by her side, she is sure as hell going to try…

Well, what do you think? I love this cover because it's awesome and creepy and cute. Plus, it totally captures the essence of the story because these dollswardensare very important in the town of Whenall.

I'll post all other buy links as well as the official release date really soon. It'll be available just in time for Halloween, which is perfect because Quin's story happens around the spookiest and most fun time of the year.

Great News!

Hey! How are you?

If you follow me on Twitter, then you've already seen my book announcement. But I'm super excited, so I wanted to post a little something over here too.

I signed a contract with Otranto House! That's right. They're going to publish my supernatural YA horror book, Wall of Dolls

Yay. I'm SO excited! 😁🎉

I actually worked on the first edit last week and it was very cool to spend time with these characters again. I really love these girls, the strange town they live in, the secrets, and the creepy dolls. I'm really looking forward to sharing their story with everyone and can't wait to hear what readers think.

Also looking forward to seeing the cover and will announce the release date as soon as I know.

For now, I've actually got a short story in Otranto House's first anthology. It's called The Girls Who Walked into the Woods and it's available now:

Have a great day!
