THE FIRST DAYS by Rhiannon Frater

The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.
Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni’s stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.
They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town. With almost no hope left outside the walls, Jenni, Katie and Jason must find sanctuary inside the Fort, less they succumb to the horrors of the outside world.

This is another zombie book that I've been looking forward to reading, and I'm very glad that I did!

Jenni is a battered wife who finds herself all alone and outside the house filled with her zombie family. Katie is a prosecutor who was minding her own business, and was forced to abandon her wife when the world changed. It's pure luck--or maybe fate--that Katie happens to be driving down Jenni's street and manages to save her only moments before she is eaten.

This brings together two very different women, with one thing in common--survival. As they drive out of the city and try to escape the growing army of the walking dead, they develop a very strong friendship, and meet a lot of helpful people along the way. They also slowly realise that zombies aren't their only threat...

I absolutely loved every minute of this fast-paced book. It's got everything that I love about zombie stories--adventure, the horror of surviving in a world that's dying around the main characters, strong and kind people helping them along the way, confusion, grief, sadness, plenty of zombie horror, tension, people behaving badly, a hint of romance, and the sheer determination of the human spirit to survive. The apocalypse can bring out the best in some people, and the worst in others. And these are the stories that make the zombie genre so fantastic!

Yeah, this is a great book and now I can't wait to read the rest of this awesome trilogy. I actually preordered the second book this morning! ;)
