Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license -- for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. In just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world -- and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever.
Man... I'm totally on a YA roll at the moment. And this book has just been added to the awesome list! What a darn good adventure. I love the worldbuilding, I love the main character, I love the supporting cast, I love the concept. This is a very clever book. I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of Tally's trilogy.
Tally's one of the uglies, in a world where everyone looks forward to becoming one of the generic pretties. At sixteen, everyone has an operation that not only changes their physical appearance, but also seems to change their attitude to life. Parties and fun is what they all have to look forward to, and Tally's no different. She wants to a pretty too, but when her friend leaves the city, her life is changed forever.
What follows is a nonstop adventure filled with danger, excitement, and a lot of realisations along the way. Everything's not as it seems in the world of the pretties...
