A HOUSE WITH GOOD BONES by T. KINGFISHER

A House With Good Bones
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I've got a bunch of T. Kingfisher books on my Paperwhite, so I finally decided to get stuck into them, and started with this one.

Sam Montgomery is an entomologists who finds herself between jobs and decides to stay with her mother for a while. When she gets there, she finds that her brother is right, their mother is acting a little strange. But the house is acting even stranger...

This story is totally addictive! I read it in twenty-four hours because I couldn't wait to find out what was going on inside the seemingly normal house in Lammergeiers Lane. Also, cool name considering the strong presence of vultures.

The book is told in Sam's POV and she's a very entertaining narrator. Not just because she questions every weird thing that's going on (total skeptic) and wants to figure out the mystery, but also because I enjoyed all the bug talk. Personally, I find bugs squirmy and don't want them inside my home, but I also think they're absolutely fascinating.

Not only is the use of bugs interesting, but so are the use of vultures and roses. Together, these reveal a twisted and cruel family secret. Oh, and did I mention that Aleister Crowley also gets a mention? Yeah.

Anyway, Sam's story is very creepy. There's a slow-burn freaky situation going on regarding her dead grandmother, and the answer doesn't disappoint. I love how the freakiness escalates from weird things creeping up beneath the surface, to literally experiencing what lies beneath the surface.

I really enjoyed this Southern gothic novel and now I'm really excited about reading all of the other books I have on my TBR pile by this author.

Sometimes, the most disturbing things are Nice and normal.
