The other night, we went to K-Mart and this book caught my eye. The cover is very colourful and I always love coloured edges, so we picked up a copy.
Barbie lives a perfect life in Heartland. She's studious, gets amazing marks, has two best friends, and a powerful guardian. She's also about to graduate from Swancrest Academy, and will find out her Fate. But when she ends up being the only one without a Fate, she's devastated. All of her hard work is for nothing. Unless she decides to make her own destiny...
Charming. Interesting. Magical.
I wasn't sure what to expect from a YA Barbie fantasy novel but I really enjoyed this adventure story starring a very familiar face in some very unfamiliar territory. She's the Barbie we all know and love, but also not.
Although there's a whimsical flair to this tale, it also ventures into some dark territory. Not just in terms of magic and monsters, but also in the darkness of grief, self-doubt, depression, losing your place in the world, anxiety, and realising that sometimes hopes and dreams don't work out. And that's before mentioning the harmful secrets, lies, and manipulation.
I found all the elements fit well together and helped the story move along at a nice pace. I was also invested all the way through and loved Barbie's voice. The story is great, but the best thing about the book is Barbie's tenacity, strength, and even her weaknesses
I'm SO glad I gave this book a go.
